A PBX (private branch exchange) is an ordinary term used to explain a business telephone system that offers to manage routing and switching of incoming/outgoing calls between a business location and the telephone network. A PBX is made up of both hardware and software that connects to communication devices such as telephone adapters, switches, routers, hubs, and telephone sets.

PBXs have management features that make communication easy and more effective within businesses. The PBX is operated by the business rather than the telephone company. Private branch exchanges used analog technology originally but modern PBXs use digital technology.

PBX Features

PBX has these essential features:

Use of multiple telephone lines in business and management of outgoing and incoming calls.

Splitting of one single phone line into many internal lines, which are identified via 3-4 digit numbers called extensions, and switching calls to the proper internal line. This saves the business from having to pay for many phone lines and allows all departments to be reached via one single phone number.

Installing phone communications inside the business.

Establishing VoIP (voice over internet protocol) system, which has a tremendous number of features and enhancements over conventional telephony, the most important being the cost savings.

Quality interface with customers via features like Call recording, IVR, Voicemail, etc.

Automating responses to calling customers with IVR (interactive voice response) whereby the system can automatically direct users to the most appropriate line via voice menus. On IVR as a caller, you hear things like "Press 1 for the Account Department, Press 2 for Finance Department, Press 3 For Complaints."

What Is The IP-PBX System?

Analog PBXes that worked only on the telephone line and switches but the IP-PBXes use networks such as the internet to channel calls. IP-PBxes are commonly preferred because they come with lots of amazing features. With the exception of old PBX systems, most PBX systems used presently tend to be IP-PBXes.

What Is Hosted PBX?

You do not always have to pay for the hardware, software, installation, and maintenance of an in-house PBX,  because there are many companies online that offer you the PBX service for a monthly fee that does not require you to pay for a lot of hardware other than your telephone sets and router. These companies are called hosted PBX services and work on the cloud and offered via an internet connection. 

Hosted PBXes have few disadvantages, but they are cheap and do not require an upfront investment.
