America Online launches its proprietary email service on the internet in 1993. In 1997, it becomes the world's largest email service provider with almost 9 million subscribers. America Online starts a web-based email service in 1997 known as NetMail. NetMail only working in Internet Explorer at that time but later it was modified to work with other platforms on the internet. In 1999, NetMail service renamed as AOL Mail.

In 2005, America Online launches one more service known as AIM Mail. This service based on Mailblocks technology who is acquired by AOL in 2004. "AIM Mail" service provides more space (2 GB) than "AOL Mail".

AOL Mail Features

  • Attachment limit of AOL Mail: 25 MB
  • AOL Mailbox size: 1,000 new messages, 4,000 sent messages and 4,000 old messages per screen name. Maximum storage of 250 GB if all messages have 25 MB attachments.
  • Supported protocols of AOL Mail: POP3, SMTP, IMAP
  • Domains of AOL Mail: @aol.com and additionally @love.com, @ygm.com, @games.com, and @wow.com
